Big Screen in the Sky- David Bowie

He wasn't a big movie star- appearing memorably in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Labyrinth (1986) (who didn't try to juggle balls in their hand after seeing this one?), The Prestige (2006) (as (Nikola Tesla), The Last Temptation of Christ (2006) (as Pontius  Pilate), Basquiat (1996) (as Andy Warhol), Zoolander (2001) (as David Bowie). Rumors have swirled for years that Todd Haynes' visual stunner Velvet Goldmine about a 70's glam superstar was based on Bowie- but Bowie vociferously denied that. Maybe it was the rooftop gay sex scene between Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor that did it.
Bowie's music, however, has been an influence that stretches far beyond the rock world to inspire not only the music of the movies- but our lives.
Godspeed, Major Tom.

  1. A few years ago, a friend recommended their favourite vampire film to me - "The Hunger" (1983) starring David Bowie, Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve. It's a really dark / uncomfortable film, and David Bowie's character is particular intriguing. Great soundtrack, including Bauhaus and Iggy Pop.
